Designed in Japan specifically for carving concave forms, this professional 4-piece hook knife set gives woodcarvers greater freedom when creating spoons, kuksas, bowls, small dishes and other hollow forms.

The set includes four different blade configurations — Right / Shallow, Right / Deep, Left / Shallow, Left / Deep. By combining shallow and deep curves with both right- and left-oriented cutting edges, you can choose the blade that best matches the grain direction, carving position and depth of the work.

Premium HSS Cutting Edge

Each blade is made from High-Speed Steel (HSS), selected for its excellent sharpness and long-lasting edge retention. The blade bites smoothly into the wood and performs particularly well when working with hardwoods, where maintaining a sharp cutting edge is essential.

Rather than simply copying conventional European-style hook knives, Michihamono developed this tool specifically to combine the cutting performance of Japanese carving tools with a blade geometry suited to spoon and hollow-form carving.

Two Different Curves

Shallow Curve

Its longer cutting edge provides smooth, controlled cuts over a wider area. Ideal for:

• Shallow spoon bowls
• Small dishes and trays
• Smoothing larger concave surfaces
• Finishing and refining curved surfaces

Deep Curve

The tighter radius makes it easier to reach areas that are difficult to carve with a shallow hook knife. Ideal for:

• Deep spoon bowls
• Kuksas and cups
• Deeper hollow forms
• Working in tighter concave areas

Why Four Knives?

Wood grain does not always run in the direction you want to carve. Having both right- and left-oriented blades allows you to approach the work from different directions instead of forcing the blade against the grain.

Combined with both shallow and deep curves, this 4-piece set provides a remarkably versatile system for hollow carving. One set lets you choose the right cutting direction and the right curve for the job.

Special Carrying Pouch Included

The 4-piece set comes with a specially designed protective pouch developed in collaboration with Aplysia. The pouch securely stores all four knives and helps protect the cutting edges during storage and transport.

It makes the set equally suitable for the workshop, carving classes, outdoor carving sessions and travel.

Important Use Notes

This knife is designed primarily for controlled hollowing and shaping. Do not try to remove too much material in a single cut. Excessive force may damage the blade or handle and may cause injury.

For deeper projects, we recommend roughing out the cavity first with a gouge or other suitable carving tool, then using the Scooping Knives for shaping and refining the inside surface.
